Healthy lives and access to health services for all is an ambitious new goal currently being considered in the post-2015 United Nations agenda for Sustainable Development. This goal can only be achieved in a sustainable way if it includes the development of new or adapted medicines, vaccines, diagnostics, devices and other health tools that work for and are accessible to those most in need. The achievement of such innovations requires strong political leadership, as well as international and multi-sectoral collaboration. It is recommended therefore that the new Development Agenda explicitly supports research and related policies and capacity building. How such a commitment can best be aligned with the health-related goals and defined through specific targets and indicators will be examined by an international panel of experts.
