Meeting Report: Alignment and Harmonisation in Health Research in Uganda

Low-income countries face a massive under-investment in health research relevant to their needs. Factors that contribute to this problem include inadequate funding for health research in and by poor countries, limited participation of scientists from developing countries in both international research and the global policy arena, and the lack of funding for health research at the country level.

‘HR-HR’ Human Resources for Health Research Final report of expert consultation Human Resources for Health Research, An Africa Perspective.

The Human Resource for Health Research (HR-HR) initiative is the first of its kind to be held in Africa and – indeed worldwide – that attempts to bring a holistic perspective to the issue of human resources for health research. The initiative is spearheaded by seven partners: AMREF, AfHRF, Council on Health Research for Development (COHRED), ACOSHED, EQUINET, Global Forum for Health Research and IDRC, that came together in 2004 to look at specific human resource needs and challenges needed to improve for health research in developing countries.

Joint COHRED/WHO publication: Consultation on National Health Research System analysis – Cambodia, Mongolia, Philippines, Viet Nam

      The World Health Organization (WHO) Headquarters initiated the Health Research System Analysis (HRSA)in 2002. It began as a pilot project to test HRSA instruments in a few selected countries in all regions, including Malaysia and the Lao People’s Democratic Republic in the Western Pacific Region.

Over the past decade, some Latin American countries have made consistent and substantial investments in research for health. This has resulted in major improvements in the quality and focus of health research and the delivery of related services to their populations. These improvements can bring benefits to the countries involved and to the region as a whole, through increased south-south linkage on health research needs and practices in Latin America.

Report Paper 4: Research for Health in Tajikistan: Strengthening the National Health Research System

Four key areas for national health research system development emerged from a consultation on research for health in Tajikistan, held in November 2005: research coordination, research culture, priority setting, and capacity strengthening. These areas need to be strengthened if the Tajik health research system is to more effectively address the health problems of the country. Lessons were also drawn from experiences in the region – Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan – countries that face problems which are very similar those of Tajikistan.
