Description: This study is the Malaysian component of the multi-country study on Essential National Health Research: An essential link to equity in development, being conducted in four other Asian countries (Bangladesh, Indonesia, Philippines and Thailand).

The five countries had agreed on collecting data for 37 major categories of indicators for monitoring health equity. According to the study results it could be said that Malaysia has an affordable health care system. The poor are more subsidised than the rich, and there is a high utilisation rate of inpatient and outpatient care of both public and private sector. Despite these findings, the study reveals that there are still important gaps in information and research for assessing equity in development. The relevant authorities should develop key indicators if Malaysia is concerned about monitoring its development in relation to equity issues.
