Description: This project will assess what evidence is required by decision-makers to inform efforts to strengthen national health research systems.  Starting with an examination of the National Health Research System concept an evaluation of the usefulness and performance of previous efforts to develop indicators will be conducted.  This will include an analysis of the steps required to feed this evidence into the policy making process to ensure that national health research systems are directed towards producing health research for development.  In the light of these findings the project will develop and evaluate a set of indicators for use by country level decision-makers.

Completion date: Development phase December 2005 – Evaluation phase 2006.
