Essential National Health Research in South Africa: Towards National Consensus Building in Health Research

Topic: African consultative process, in preparation for the International Conference on Health Research for Development (Bangkok, 2000)

Place: South Africa

Description: Community participation is a guiding principle of the Essential National Health Research strategy. Despite the importance contributed to it, there is little systematic knowledge of how community participation actually functions, or could function, in ENHR. In order to address these issues, COHRED commissioned a study to examine how community participation has been defined, understood and practiced in countries that have launched ENHR. The paper provides some thought provoking glimpses of the problems and potential of community participation.
