Essential National Health Research in District Development: Lessons Learned

Topic: Draft Report

Description: This report of the Trinidad and Tobago case study on community participation in the Essential National Health Research process, is one of five case studies in a multi-country study, conducted by COHRED’s Working Group on Community Participation. The objectives of the study are: to find out what community participation in ENHR has in fact meant in selected countries that have implemented the strategy, and to Document examples of community involvement in ENHR in order to show modalities worked out in different countries.
The main conclusions of the case study conducted in Trinidad and Tobago include:
* There was minimal community involvement in health research studies in Trinidad and Tobago
* Community involvement in ENHR consisted mainly of being a subject in a research study
* There is a healthy and growing research environment, which is increasingly following the concepts of ENHR
* The analysis of a specific research project in Trinidad and Tobago shows that if the community had been asked to identify the problems, that research and intervention would have followed a more integrated approach.
