One aspect of this work is a partnership of African schools of public health, which plans to map public health capacity in Africa, in a process led jointly by Makerere University Institute of Public Health and COHRED. Expected outcomes of this effort are an assessment of the current situation; guidelines or approaches for schools and countries to make action plans to improve their skills and effectiveness.

We are interested in opening a dialogue with academic institutions and other interested partners, around four key questions:

How can the needs of schools of public health be realized (for example as outlined in the AfriHealth study of educational capacity in public health in for Africa)?
What new role should schools of public health play in the translation of research; and what skills do schools and countries need to acquire to make this happen?
How can schools and countries build these skills; and what are practical ways to achieve this (e.g. learning communities, networks, fellowships, distance learning, short courses, etc.)?
What specific actions should be taken; which players are best placed to bring their expertise to the table to the benefit of all?
