Research for Health Africa (R4HA) Initiative

A NEPAD Agency/COHRED partnership to strengthen national governance of research and innovation for health in Africa

The Initiative aims to improve the quality and relevance of research for health produced in Africa, by African countries. It starts with improving governance of research in countries, and will address other system strengthening issues (such as financing, human resources, and research communication) when the basic goverance structures are in place.

Pretoria, 23 February, 2010 – A group of experts and policy makers from across Africa tabled practical approaches and action points aimed at boosting pharmaceutical innovation on the continent. Their emphasis was on putting countries in the drivers’ seat for their medicines access, development and local production. This was the conclusion of the extended technical committee of the Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Plan for Africa, in Pretoria, concluded on February 20.
