NHRS Mapping: 15 Pacific Island countries

A NHRS Mapping initiative was conducted with 15 Pacific Island Countries to inform a regional meeting to assess how health research capacities could be strengthened in the region. The participating countries were: American Samoa, the Cook Islands, Fiji, Kiribati, the Marshall Islands, Nauru, Niue, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, the Solomon Islands, Tokelau, Tonga, Tuvalu, and Vanuatu.

Assessing National Health Research Systems

The starting point for strengthening a country’s health research system is to have a clear picture of the current state of health research – and the areas where development should be targeted. COHRED works with countries to do NHRS assessments.

To date, assessments have been done in more than 50 countries. Many are now using the evidence they have collected to formulate policies, set priorities and improve governance. An overview of this work is provided below. Specific country information is provided under related resources.

Levels of System Development

Political commitment to research for health is a prerequisite for optimal development of a national health research system (NHRS). If this does not yet exist in a country, COHRED’s first focus will be to help the country develop this political support.

This is done through advocacy and communication efforts or, for example, by creating links between country partners and neighbouring countries who are creating a system for health research.
