The Algiers Ministerial Conference on Research for Health in the African Region is part of the regional preparatory process for the Bamako Global Ministerial Forum on Research for Health, to be held in November 2008. Other preparatory meetings in the Bamako process were held in Tehran (November 2007), Bangkok (2008) and Copenhagen (April 2008).

The HRP Special Programme is the main instrument of the UN system that coordinates the global research effort in the field of sexual and reproductive health. It brings together health care providers, policy makers, scientists, clinicians and consumer and community representatives to identify and address priorities for research aimed at improving sexual and reproductive health2. The Policy and Coordination Committee (PCC) is the governing body of HRP, for decision making on policy, strategic orientation, programmes and budget.
